What Size of Skips Are There?
When you choose to hire a skip with us, we offer several options in regards to size to ensure that we have an option for the task, no matter the scale.
4-Yard Skip
This skip is ideal for small scale refurbishments, DIY projects and small house clearances. This is also referred to as a midi skip and holds between 30-40 full refuge sacks.
6-Yard Skip
Again we would put this one down as a small scale refurbishment and similar to the 4-yard, but obviously holds more. You can expect around 40-50 full refuge sacks for example, and this skip is sometimes referred to as a small builders skip.
8-Yard Skip
If your project is larger then this is what we would recommend, this is suitable for general construction works and full house clear outs. Holding around 60-80 full refuge sacks and is referred to as a traditional builders skip.
12-Yard Skip
This skip is suitable for large construction projects or full renovations, even a full office clearout. You can expect it to hold between 80-110 full refuge sacks and is also referred to as a large builders skip.
16-Yard Skip
This is usually for commercial or full scale residential clearouts and may be suitable if you have a large scale kitchen or bathroom refit. These skips can typically hold 110-140 full refuge sacks and are referred to as an extra large builders skip.
How Much is Skip Hire?
You may think it’s relatively simple, but there are quite a few factors that go into pricing hiring a skip, so it does vary depending on your specific requirements. You may be asking, what affects the price of a skip? Well to get an accurate quote for you, we need the following information:
- Size of the skip - As you may expect, the size of the skip has an impact on the price. The larger ones are obviously more expensive.
- Location - This is particularly impacted by labour rates and availability, but the location can have an impact on the overall price.
- Type of waste - There are certain types of waste that are more expensive to dispose of, this is generally waste that is harder to recycle. Inert waste like rubble, soil and sand, as well as hazardous waste like batteries, paint and pesticides may see an increase in the overall cost. If you’re unsure about this, just specify what type of waste you are removing and we will help provide further information.
- Duration of hire - Depending upon availability, the duration of the hire can have an affect on the overall price.
Keeping that in mind, we can provide a guide cost on how much your skip hire may be as it’s subject to all the conditions listed above.
4-6 Yard Skips
Small Skip - Priced £100-200
6-8 Yard Skips
Medium Skip - Priced £200-350
12-16 Yard Skips
Large Skip - Priced £350-500
What Can’t You Put in a Skip?
This can slightly vary depending on the hire, but generally speaking there are quite a few materials you can’t put in our skips, or if you wish to do so you need to tell us beforehand as there will be a premium.
Hazardous Waste: Substances such as chemicals, solvents, batteries and paints require specialist disposal handling so generally aren’t allowed. Asbestos removal is also one, that we offer a specific service for.
Medical Waste: Syringes, needles and pharmaceutical products have specific regulations to dispose of, so they aren’t allowed in our skips.
Tires: Unfortunately, tires aren’t allowed as they have different disposal regulations and additional fees to do so.
Bulky Items: Some larger bulky items may not be allowed in the skip, for example a fridge freezer. If you are planning on filling the skip with large items, please discuss this with us prior to hiring.
Need your to get rid of waste in a cost effective way?
We can deliver a skip on a short timescale.
Is Skip Hire Worth It?
With being a skip hire company, here at WRG, we’re always going to say skip hire is a worthwhile investment for your waste disposal needs.
They provide a convenient and efficient way of disposing of your waste that allows you to save a significant time on any household job you are undertaking by not having to have regular visits to the tip. They can also be cost effective depending on what you are disposing of, as some tips tend to charge you, especially for rubble, that can add up to a similar amount as a skip.
There are some things to consider though, with the main one of course being cost, if you only have a small amount of waste then skip hire can be expensive and may not be worth it. Space is also something you should take into account, you need to be able to accommodate the skip on your property or obtain a permit to place the skip on the road.
We can complete jobs far larger than this, it’s just to serve as a guide and an idea of what size of the job it may be to help you understand our quotation.
How Long Can I Keep a Skip For?
This is a hard question to answer, as it completely depends, however we will always try and work with you on the deadline you require. We try to be as flexible as possible, and even if you wish to extend we will do our best to accommodate the request.
Keeping that in mind, the length of your skip hire could be from days to months, it depends upon our availability at that given time but this is something we can discuss in detail when you enquire and we know the area of the skip hire.

Frequently Asked Questions
Interested in skip hire but still have a few burning questions? Then don’t worry, we’ve collated some of the most common for you below – but even if we don’t answer your query on the page, then please feel free to get in touch and we will happily assist.
Are skip bags cheaper than skips?
Well yes they are, but they contain a lot less – if you only have a small amount of waste to remove then they can definitely be worth it.
Can you hire a skip just for an hour?
Whilst it isn’t ideal, this may be something that we can arrange for you. It’s a surprisingly common query to remove waste which you already have ready to place in the skip, and depending on availability we may be able to do this.
Is using someone else's skip illegal?
Yes, it is. You’ll be surprised how often this question comes up, from both sides of the coin, using someone else’s skip can be considered theft, trespassing or fly tipping, so don’t do it.
What to do if someone dumps in your skip?
Call the non-emergency police number 111, this is classed as fly tipping – the police may want to shift through the waste and find out what has been fly tipped, as well as follow up on any nearby CCTV.
