It also doesn’t hurt that they have a rating of 4.9 on Trustpilot at the time of writing, from a total of 428 reviews with only 2 reporting a negative experience. Choosing the best asbestos removal companies

Research is the key. There are a lot of asbestos removal companies out there, from small locals to large nationals, when researching there is a lot of things to take into account, but for this list we actually found review sites, in particular Trustpilot, the most useful, reading through both the positive and negative experiences from actual customers.

Aside from the reviews, a few of the other things you should look at is their experience, and importantly accreditations. Here’s a breakdown of what we would recommend that you look for from each company you research:

Licensing & accreditation

There are a couple of different licences and professional bodies that you want to look for when choosing a company.

HSE Licence which is the Health and Safety Executive body.

There are three professional bodies, ARCA (Asbestos Removal Contractors Association), ATaC (Asbestos Testing and Consultancy Association), UKATA (UK Asbestos Training Association).

ISO Ceritfications include ISO 9001 (quality management), ISO 14001 (environmental management) or ISO 45001 (health and safety management).

Experience & expertise

Read about the company on their website, look for companies with a lengthy history of expertise, and that they regularly deal with your specific type of removal needs.

Safety Precautions

Make sure the company conduct a risk assessment before jumping in and starting the work, they should provide a detailed plan of the work and outline exactly how they are going to remove the asbestos safely. It should also go without saying that the workers should be equipped with PPE.

Waste Disposal Practice

Often the companies will detail how they dispose of the waste, you want to ensure they adhere to environmental regulations and are minimising contamination risks.

Insurance

This can be a bit harder to find, but you can ask for it if you want and they should provide it - they should have adequate Public Liability Insurance and Employers Liability Insurance.

Reviews & Transparent Pricing

We mentioned looking into the companies reviews previously, but we would say to search and look out for the transparent pricing aspect in particular, which you can search for reviews with the keyword “price”. Some companies will quote a price, but when they start the work, if they haven’t done a proper assessment beforehand, they may re-quote on the job, leaving you paying more.

We also know that obviously the overall price factors into the equation, you want to choose someone who isn’t too expensive and we would recommend that you try and compare at least 3 quotes – but you also want a job done right, asbestos is dangerous, and also not the cheapest to dispose of properly. The quotes may range slightly, but if you choose the cheapest one then do ensure that you check their accreditations and reviews so that you can have the peace of mind that they are disposing of the hazardous material in the correct manner.

Where to search for asbestos removal companies

There are a couple of places that we would recommend researching to find a suitable and reliable asbestos company, in this order:

Asbestos is dangerous, and you want to ensure that whomever you choose to conduct the job is safe, and certified. The best way of doing so is by reading other genuine customer experiences.

These are two great resources for finding local and national tradesmen, they are verified and vetted for quality assurance and they also come with their own reviews and rating system. The only downside of these companies is that tradesmen do have to pay to be featured on them, and not all do – it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re bad.

Lastly, you should use trusty old Google. You can try generic searches like “asbestos removal” to find nationwide companies, or you can use “asbestos removal in [your area]” to find smaller local companies, but it’s unlikely you will find local tradesmen.

There are loads of community social groups, and it’s very likely your area has one. If you aren’t already a member then these are great places to join and ask recommendations for local tradesmen, asbestos removal included as often people based on experience.

Do I choose a local or national company?

That’s really personal preference, there are factors and benefits to both sides of the coin on this one, so we’ll have to sit on the fence in our recommendation.

Local – If you’re cost conscious

There are loads of advantages to going local, including that it’s likely to provide a more tailored and personal service with a smaller team, their work and importantly your satisfaction will mean more to them, as there’s more at stake with a lot of tradesmen relying on word of mouth for jobs. It’s also very likely that they’ve had a job similar to yours in the past, if they are experienced, as in certain areas there will typically be a set of houses that were built or refurbished at a certain time that asbestos was commonly used – meaning they’ve likely seen your exact asbestos issue before.

Another BIG reason to go local is cost. They will almost always be cheaper than national companies as they don’t have the large overheads to account for, plus they don’t have the transport costs to take into consideration.

National – If you’re quality conscious

National companies are easier to find, and use. Their service is generally more consistent across the board, and they also have larger teams at their disposal which may make them suitable for larger scale projects. It’s much easier to find and research a national company’s reputation as well, they will likely have online reviews, and a footprint of their work in some shape of form which gives you valuable peace of mind, and trust.

The reason we think you should choose national over local is if you’re really conscious of the quality. That’s not to say local tradesmen don’t do a quality job, but national companies usually have to adhere to quality standards in a much stricter manner as the potential punishments are much larger.

Will I need an asbestos survey & is that a different company?

Majority of asbestos removal companies, if not all, will offer asbestos surveys which are often conducted prior to the removal of asbestos. Companies do this prior to removing the asbestos to manage and control the risk, so they can be fully aware of the condition and strategy needed to ensure a safe remove or encapsulation.

If you are researching companies to remove your asbestos, then they should offer a survey service – if they don’t, which should be extremely rare, we would advise looking into another company.

Who are WRG?

We are waste removal specialists, WRG or the Waste Recycling Group are a company who specialises in a range of services related to the removal of various types of waste, including Asbestos. We offer the safe and controlled removal of asbestos, adhering to safety regulations and conducting a professional job at a fantastic price.
