What is Asbestos?
Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring fibrous material that was widely found in homes, including those built or worked on in the Halifax area, with the material commonly used between the years of 1930 and 1985. It was a very affordable material, and its properties made it prosperous to use in various different places across the home. It was particularly fire resistant and importantly, cheap, which made it a popular choice.
However, decades later, after its common application in thousands of homes in the area, it was discovered to have serious health hazards when disturbed and inhaled. Exposure to these fibres can cause life threatening respiratory diseases and in some cases even lung cancer. After they became aware of these risks it was shortly banned in 1985, well at least the blue and brown versions of the material were, the white asbestos followed later in 1999.
When it got banned it was instantly halted in terms of its use in new products and construction but this didn’t really address the issue – that being that it still existed in older buildings and homes, there was no government funding for removal as it’s deemed safe until disturbed but the older it becomes the more unstable it is, and it requires careful management to remove and protect human health.
Where is Asbestos Commonly Found?
With asbestos being used in construction material for almost 15 years, as you might imagine, it’s pretty commonly found in homes across the UK, but also Halifax. If your home was built, or underwent any construction work within the 1930s-1980s then there’s a good chance that you may require an asbestos removal service such as our own.
If you’re looking around your Halifax home for asbestos, there may be a few areas that you will find it specifically, and here are the few main places to look:
- Textured Coatings: Artex was extremely popular and contained asbestos, this swirled design is often found on walls or ceilings.
- Ceiling Tiles: There are a lot of ceiling tiles manufactured in the early days of using asbestos that contain AIB or Asbestos Insulation Board.
- Insulation: Any loose insulation in floors, loft conversions or cavity walls may well contain asbestos.
- Partition Walls: Some older partition walls also have the same AIB, so this may be more common if your house underwent construction during the aforementioned time period.
- Composites: Windowsills, bath panels, old boilers or toilets often contain asbestos.
- Pipe Lagging: A lot of the pipe from the time it was use has likely corroded but if you find an old heating system or something of that kind, the pipes may contain asbestos.
- Partition Walls: If your home underwent renovation and had partition walls put up during the time of asbestos usage there is every chance that it could been of asbestos construction.
We’re a large and reliable team, making us a great choice for your office removal needs, no matter how big or small.
Why Was Asbestos Used So Much In Halifax Properties?
If you live in the area you will know that a large majority of the houses in Halifax are fairly old, which is to be expected of a town that was first recorded in 1091. We’re of course not saying that the properties are that old, but a large amount of them were built in the 19th century when the town had to keep up with a population influx due to the large amount of mills at the time, creating loads of jobs in the area.
During the period that asbestos was used there was a lot of building that was undertaken in Halifax, including the expansion of red brick housing in the 1930s, urban renewal programmes in the 1950s, and the building of high rise flats in the 1960s and economic funds being injected in the 1980s – which all caused the housing market to grow significantly.
Why Is Asbestos Removal Important?
It’s important to remove because of your health, as we’ve touched on asbestos can be an extremely hazardous material if breathed in and the health conditions it can cause are serious and life threatening.
Asbestos isn’t dangerous if it’s undisturbed, so you may just think it’s worth leaving, but at this point with it not being used in construction for a long time then there’s a high risk that it could stay decaying, causing the release of fibres over time.
If you have asbestos in your home then it’s only a matter of time until you’ll need to have it removed – it can also devalue your Halifax property if you look to sell with it, as it will show up in a RICs survey which home buyers can use to reduce the price.

How Long Will The Asbestos Removal Process Take?
It’s a difficult question to answer, because when we attend your Halifax property the job may be bigger, or smaller than we first thought. It’s not easy to give you a straight answer, but we can tell you that asbestos removal in general typically isn’t a large scale project and will only take from a few hours up to a day, maybe two at the most depending how hard it is to get to the asbestos itself.
How long it could take to remove is determined by:
Extent
How large the contaminated areas is
Type
The type of asbestos it is, as some take longer than others
Area
The area the asbestos is in, for instance it may be slightly longer to remove from a roof than a wall.
What we will say is before we undertake the project, we will make sure that you are fully aware of the estimated time which we will try to ensure is as accurate as possible for the removal of asbestos from your Halifax property, so you know exactly what to expect.
