History

The Welbeck landfill and reclamation site covers an area of approximately 300 hectares (the equivalent of 300 average size football pitches) on both sides of the River Calder. Of this, the landfill occupies a relatively small proportion of the area - some 100 hectares in total.

Until 1998, the majority of the site was worked for sand and gravel extraction. The resulting excavations were then partially or completely filled with pulverised fuel ash (PFA) and colliery spoil from the Selby coalfield. However, controlled landfill operations were seen as the only viable way of restoring the entire site to an attractive public amenity.

WRG began landfilling at Welbeck in 1998, following the granting of planning permission and a Waste Management Licence (now known as an Environmental Permit) in 1997.

Compost

We operate compost plants throughout the UK, and compost over 100,000 tonnes every year.

The compost produced finds a variety of end users; restoration of our own landfill sites, some is returned to our local authority partners, and, increasingly it is used for the manufacture of top quality soils and bagged compost for the retail sector.

Methods of composting; Windrow composting, Pod composting, In-vessel systems.
