Even after increasing recycling, composting and energy recovery there will be some materials left for disposal.

Target 45+ aims to reduce landfill to the absolute minimum. But landfill will always have a role in sustainable waste management - even though it is a declining one.

WRG operates the landfills at Gallymoor in East Riding and Winterton in North Lincolnshire. Target 45+ will continue to use these facilities for final disposal of materials left after recycling, composting and energy recovery.

Compost

We operate compost plants throughout the UK, and compost over 100,000 tonnes every year.

The compost produced finds a variety of end users; restoration of our own landfill sites, some is returned to our local authority partners, and, increasingly it is used for the manufacture of top quality soils and bagged compost for the retail sector.

Methods of composting; Windrow composting, Pod composting, In-vessel systems.
